What Actually Happens In A Free Home Assessment With Healthy Home Team

What Is A Healthy Home Team Assessment

A Healthy Home Team assessment is a free, hour-long visit from a local advisor who walks through your home and tells you exactly how it’s performing — how warm it is, how dry it is, how well it breathes, and what it’s costing you to run.

It’s a booking, not a sales call. You pick a time, an advisor comes out, and at the end you get a plain-language picture of your home’s insulation, heating, ventilation and moisture, along with what could be improved and what funding might cover it. There’s no obligation to do anything afterwards.

We assess homes against the New Zealand Healthy Homes Standards — the same benchmarks that apply to rental properties — because they’re a useful yardstick whether you’re a landlord or an owner-occupier. If you’re not sure what a healthy home actually means in practice, we’ve broken it down here.

Which Assessment You Should Book

We run a few different assessments depending on what you’re trying to find out:

  • General Healthy Home Assessment — free, 60 minutes. The full walk-through covering heating, insulation and energy efficiency. This is the one most homeowners want.
  • 20-Minute Phone Consultation — free. If you’d rather talk it through before anyone visits, an advisor will take you through your options over the phone.
  • EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes Assessment — free, 60 minutes. Specifically checks whether your home qualifies for a Warmer Kiwi Homes insulation grant.
  • Blown Insulation Assessment — free, 60 minutes. Checks your existing insulation levels and identifies where top-ups are needed.
  • HHGA Rental Property Inspection & Report — $189, 60 minutes plus a written report. A compliance inspection for landlords who need documented proof their property meets the Healthy Homes Standards.

Book whichever fits, or call 06 355 5800 if you’re not sure which one you need.

Who Is Healthy Home Team

Healthy Home Team helps New Zealanders live in healthier homes. We believe that where you live has a direct impact on how you feel, and that every homeowner deserves access to good information about their home environment. Our advisors connect people with assessments, advice, and support to make real improvements to their living spaces.

Alongside assessments we supply and install insulation, heating, cooling, ventilation and energy-efficiency upgrades like LED lighting and solar — so once we’ve told you what your home needs, we can also be the ones to sort it. You can read more about who we are and what we stand for.

What Actually Happens In A Free Home Assessment

When one of our trained advisors visits your home, they carry out a thorough walk-through of the property. This is not a sales pitch or a quick look around. It is a genuine assessment that looks at the key factors affecting your home’s health and comfort.

Here is what our advisors typically look at during a visit:

  • Insulation — We check whether your ceiling and underfloor insulation is present, thick enough, in good condition, and actually meeting the R-values required for your region.
  • Heating — We look at how your home is currently heated and whether your heating source is sized correctly for the space and running efficiently.
  • Ventilation — Poor airflow leads to moisture problems and can affect air quality. We assess how well your home breathes, including extraction in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Moisture and dampness — We look for signs of moisture, condensation, drainage problems or rising damp that could be affecting your health and your home’s structure.
  • Draughts and general home conditions — We take note of gaps, unsealed fireplaces, and any other factors contributing to an uncomfortable or unhealthy living environment.

After the assessment, you receive clear feedback on what we found. We explain things in plain language, so you know exactly what the situation is in your home and what options are available to you.

Why Getting A Home Assessment Is Worth It

Many New Zealanders live with cold, damp, or poorly ventilated homes without realising the full impact it is having on their health and their power bills. A home that is not properly insulated or heated costs more to run and can contribute to respiratory issues, poor sleep, and other health problems.

Getting an assessment from Healthy Home Team gives you real information based on your actual home, not generic advice. You find out exactly where your home stands, and you get guidance on what improvements are possible. Because the general assessment is free, there is genuinely nothing to lose by getting one done.

For many homeowners, this assessment is the first step toward a warmer, drier, and healthier home. Some people are also surprised to find they may qualify for subsidised or even fully funded upgrades through government schemes, which our team can help connect you with.

Who Can Book An Assessment

Our free home assessment is open to homeowners — whether you own your home outright or are paying it off.

If you are a landlord, the path is slightly different. For general advice on improving a rental, the free assessment still applies. If you need documented proof that a property meets the Healthy Homes Standards, that’s our HHGA Rental Property Inspection and Report, which is $189 and includes a written report you can hold on file.

We have advisors across the lower and central North Island, covering North and South Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Central, Horowhenua and Wairarapa, along with a national solar solution designer. You can check whether there’s an advisor in your area before you book.

Booking is straightforward. Head to our booking page, choose the assessment that suits you, and pick a time. One of our team will confirm the details with you.

There is no obligation attached to the assessment. We come, we look, we share what we found, and you decide what, if anything, you would like to do next.

Funded Upgrades You May Not Know About

One of the most valuable parts of working with Healthy Home Team is that we help connect homeowners with funding they may not be aware of. Government-backed programmes like Warmer Kiwi Homes provide grants to eligible homeowners for insulation and heating upgrades. Our team knows the landscape of what is currently available and can help you work out whether you qualify.

This means that for many homeowners, the improvements recommended after an assessment can be carried out at little or no cost. You can read about the funding pathways available, or check your grant eligibility before you even book.

Take The First Step Toward A Healthier Home

Your home should be a place where you feel warm, comfortable, and well. If you are unsure whether your home is performing as well as it should, an assessment from Healthy Home Team is the smartest first move you can make.

An hour of an advisor’s time costs you nothing and tells you everything — what’s working, what isn’t, and what it would take to fix.

Book your assessment or call us on 06 355 5800. A healthier home starts with knowing what you are working with.

Homeowner Funding Options for Energy Efficient Home Upgrades in New Zealand

Making your home warmer, drier, and more energy efficient can make a real difference to how your home feels. Good insulation, efficient heating, ventilation, hot water heat pumps, and solar power can all help reduce energy use and lower running costs over time.

For many homeowners, the biggest barrier is the upfront cost. The good news is that there are several homeowner funding options available in New Zealand. These include green energy loans from major banks and government support through the EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes programme.

Why Upgrade Your Home’s Energy Efficiency Now

Making energy efficiency improvements to your home pays off in multiple ways. Better insulation, efficient heating systems, and solar power reduce your monthly power bills significantly. EECA reports that good insulation alone can save around $340 per year in heating costs for the average home.

Beyond the financial benefits, these upgrades create healthier living conditions. Proper insulation and ventilation reduce dampness, prevent mould growth, and maintain more stable indoor temperatures. This means fewer respiratory issues and a more comfortable environment for your family.

The sooner you invest in these improvements, the sooner you start saving money. With current homeowner funding options offering low or zero interest rates, now is an ideal time to upgrade.

Bank Green Energy Loan Options

Several major banks provide specialised loans for energy efficiency improvements. These green energy loans typically offer better terms than standard personal loans, making upgrades more accessible.

Westpac Greater Choices Home Loan

Westpac offers one of the most generous packages with their Greater Choices Home Loan. You can borrow up to $50,000 interest-free for five years to fund energy efficient upgrades. This loan covers heat pumps, insulation, double glazing, ventilation systems, and solar power systems. The loan has no establishment fees and allows early repayment without penalties.

ANZ Good Energy Home Loan

ANZ’s option lets you top up your existing home loan by $3,000 to $80,000 at just 1.00% per year for three years. This covers heat pumps, insulation, ventilation systems, water heating upgrades, and complete solar installations including batteries and grid connections.

ASB Better Homes Top Up

ASB offers up to $80,000 at 1% per year for three years, requiring at least 20% home equity. Their programme covers professional insulation, heat pump systems, extractor fans, ground moisture barriers, ventilation systems, and solar solutions.

BNZ Better Future Home Loan Top-Up

BNZ provides up to $80,000 at 1% per year fixed for three years. Their loan covers insulation, ventilation, heat pumps, water heating systems, window glazing, solar power, and even rainwater tanks. Multiple top-ups are allowed up to the $80,000 limit.

EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes Funding

The government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes programme provides direct grants for insulation and heating upgrades. Recent programme expansions mean around 300,000 more New Zealand homes may now qualify for support.

The programme offers different levels of funding based on your home’s location and circumstances.

Warmer Kiwi Homes grants for insulation are available to:

  1. Homes built prior to 2008
  2. Occupied by the homeowner and located in an eligible area OR
  3. Owned and occupied by a holder of either a Community Services Card or a SuperGold Combo Card

Your eligibility is based on where you live, your home’s deprivation decile rating, and whether you hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card.

Heat Pump Grants and Heating Support

Beyond insulation, the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme also provides grants for efficient heating systems. Heat pumps are included in both bank loan programmes and government grants, making them highly accessible upgrades.

Heat pumps provide year-round climate control, heating in winter and cooling in summer. They use significantly less electricity than traditional heaters while maintaining more consistent temperatures throughout your home.

Getting Started with Your Home Upgrades

The first step is determining which upgrades your home needs most. Professional assessments by one of our healthy home advisers can identify priority areas and provide accurate quotes for funding applications. Most banks require quotes less than 60-90 days old for their green energy loans.

We work with approved installers and can arrange qualifying quotes for both bank loans and government grants. Our team understands the requirements for different funding programmes and can guide you through the application process.

If you have questions about homeowner funding options or want to explore which programmes suit your situation best, contact one of our local advisers. We’re here to help you navigate the available options and create a plan that works for your home and budget.

A family happy after receiving the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant

Did You Know Insulation Subsidies Are Available That Can Cover Up to 90% of the Cost

Keeping your home warm and dry can be expensive, but there’s good news for homeowners across New Zealand. There are insulation subsidies like the EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant that can cover up to 90% of the cost of installing ceiling and underfloor insulation.

These insulation subsidies help families make their homes warmer, drier, and healthier without the upfront cost that can hold many people back.

What the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant Offers

The Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant, managed by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), was created to help New Zealanders reduce heat loss, cut down on energy use, and live in healthier homes.

The grant currently covers:

  • 50–90% of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation installed in your home.
  • Up to 90% of the cost of an approved heater such as a heat pump or efficient wood or pellet burner.

Since the programme began, over 170,000 insulation and heating projects have been completed across the country. That means thousands of New Zealand families are now living in warmer, drier homes with lower power bills.

Who Can Apply

The Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant is available to homeowners (owner-occupiers) who meet the following criteria:

  • Your home was built before 2008
  • You, the homeowner, have a Community Services Card or a SuperGold Combo Card
  • Or your home is located in an area identified as NZDep 7, 8, 9, or 10

Even if your home already has insulation, it may not meet today’s standards. If that’s the case, you could still qualify for a subsidy to upgrade or top up your insulation.

Why Insulation Is Important

Insulation plays an important role in keeping your home comfortable all year. In winter, it keeps warmth inside so you spend less on heating. In summer, it keeps hot air out, helping to maintain a cooler indoor temperature.

Ceiling insulation is one of the most effective ways to stop heat from escaping, while underfloor insulation prevents cold air and moisture from entering through the floor. Together, they create a warmer, drier home that’s easier to heat and better for your health.

Homes without proper insulation can lose up to 35% of their heat through the ceiling and 10–15% through the floor. That’s energy and money literally escaping through your home’s structure. Installing insulation helps you save on power bills and creates a more comfortable living space for your family.

Helping More Kiwis Live in Healthier Homes

Until recently, these grants were mainly available to low-income households or those living in the highest deprivation areas. Now, the Government has expanded the programme, making it easier for a lot more people to qualify for help.

This change is making a real difference for homeowners who previously couldn’t afford insulation or heating upgrades. By reducing the upfront costs, the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant gives more families the chance to create warm, dry, and healthy homes.
